Zack - Legend of a Mountain Man

Hi all,

Molly and I met with a couple of friends for lunch today. Kevin and Cat had something they wanted to show us (I could say - show off to us). You see their new baby had arrived and we were going to get to see Zackary for the first time. He was born Dec 10, 2010 at 12:24am.... that date has little meaning for most BUT it had a special meaning for me... He was born 24 minutes after my birth date of Dec 09. That made him special for me anyway ;-)

As I looked at him, my imagination ran wild. What would this little fella become when he grew up? Where would he live? How tall would he be and how heavy? My imagination just kept going. My only problem was my imagination started running in reverse. Being a follower of history, my imagination carried Zackary back in time... to the days of the Mountain men when they trapped for Beaver in the Rocky Mountains. I figured he was born 200 years before in 1810 - Dec 10th to be exact. That would put him to be in his 20s when he traveled to the mountains and earned his fame with men like Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, Thunder Mountain, and others.

Well, that had the making of a poem and the following is the result.

Legend of a Mountain Man

This is the legend of a mountain man
Zackary was his name
He was feared by one and all
Zackary earned his fame

He rode into the wilderness wild
To search for the beaver plew
He traveled the Rocky Mountains
Tamed it for me and for you

He saw sites others could not
`cause they feared for their lives
Zack never knew the feel of fear
He lived by gun, hawk and knives

This is the legend of a mountain man
Zackary was his name
From him, the grizzlies backed down
The Indians did the same

They all knew of this mountain man
He was not to be messed with
Low-landers didn't believe him true
They chose to think him a myth

But those who rode the trails up high
Knew this mountain man true
He became a legend of the winds
While hunting for beaver plew

This is the legend of a mountain man
Zackary was his name
He was feared by one and all
Zackary earned his fame

The picture above is of my brother and dearest friend. We shared many campfires together and wished we could have rode the mountains too.... Maybe we would have found Zachary to share a camp site with. Ahhh the tales we would tell..

Hope you enjoy the poem.... but you have to let your imagination run wild ... and you can be there too...... Can't you hear the wind .. and smell the coffee??
